But just how do you go about evaluating and comparing schools so that you subsequently pick the ideal one? Most prospective students start by researching the medical assistant schools that are nearest to their residences and then gravitate toward those that have the lowest tuition. While cost and location are very important, such things as accreditation, internship programs and job assistance are critical factors also. You may choose to research several online medical assistant programs as an option as well (more about that later). The bottom line is that prior to selecting a college you need to complete your due diligence and compare all pertinent qualifications of the schools you are evaluating. And to assist you with that process, we have provided several questions that you should ask all of the schools on your “maybe” list. But prior to starting that review, let’s talk a little bit about the responsibilities of a medical assistant and the type of credentials and training that are offered.

The Duties of a Medical Assistant

Primarily their function is ensure that the Ontario Center NY clinics, hospitals and other healthcare centers where they work operate successfully. Depending on the size or type of facility, they can be more of a clinical assistant, an administrative assistant, or in smaller facilities both. They are responsible for providing direct assistance to the nurses, doctors and other medical professionals but can also be found working in an office or at the front desk. A few of the many responsibilities of a medical assistant include:

  • Filling out insurance forms and filing claims
  • Scheduling and verifying appointments
  • Taking vital signs and weighing patients
  • Taking blood and other fluid and tissue specimens
  • Preparing rooms and instruments for physicians
  • Giving general support during examinations and procedures

While medical assistants may carry out almost any task they are authorized to under New York law, some choose to specialize in a specific area and earn certification. Two of the options available are for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) and the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) provided by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

Medical Assistant Courses

In contrast to most other healthcare practitioners, medical assistants are not mandated to become licensed, certified, or to obtain a college degree. However, many Ontario Center NY health care employers prefer to hire graduates of an accredited medical assistant training program (we’ll cover accreditation later ) that are certified. There are basically 2 choices available for a formal education. The first and fastest path to becoming a medical assistant is to acquire a certificate or diploma. These programs typically take about one year to complete, some as little as six to nine months. They are developed to teach the fundamentals of medical assisting and ready graduates for entry level positions. The second option is to earn an Associate Degree, which are normally 2 year programs provided at junior and community colleges together with trade and vocational schools. They are more expansive in design than the diploma or certificate programs, and include liberal arts courses in addition to the medical assistant classes. They usually have a clinical component involving an internship with a local healthcare practice. Associate Degrees are commonly a pre-requisite for and credits can be transferred to a 4 year Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Assistant Studies or a related field.

Online Medical Assistant Courses

They are a good option for students who may not have time to attend classes on campus but could work them in if accessible at home. This is a particularly good alternative for students who continue to work full-time while attaining their degree or certificate. As an added benefit, some online programs have cheaper tuitions than the more traditional on campus alternatives. Ancillary costs such as for textbooks, commuting and school supplies can be reduced as well. Just bear in mind that any requirements for clinical training or internships must still be satisfied, but they can usually be performed in Ontario Center NY area medical care facilities. If you can earn a degree without the rigid structure of participating in supervised classes on-campus, then this approach to receiving your training might be the right option for you. With the online lessons and the clinical training, everything needed to achieve proficiency to perform as a medical assistant is provided.

Certification Options for Medical Assistants

As previously mentioned, certification is not a legal mandate, but is an excellent option for individuals who wish to boost their careers. Not only will it help in attaining employment after graduation, but it may also enhance preliminary salary negotiations. Many possible Ontario Center NY medical employers just will not employ a medical assistant that has not attained accredited formal training or certification. One of the most popular and perhaps the most respected certification is the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) provided by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). To qualify to apply for the CMA examination, an applicant must have graduated or will be graduating within thirty days from an accredited medical assistant program. Additional certifications are available as well, including the CMAA and the CCMA that we previously mentioned which are provided by the NHA.

Topics to Ask Medical Assistant Schools

Questions to ask Ontario Center NY medical assistant programsPrior to assessing your medical assistant school alternatives, you need to choose which kind of credential you would like to attain, and if you would prefer attending classes on campus or online at home. After those selections have been made, you can begin the process of evaluating medical assistant schools. As we discussed at the beginning of this article, a number of potential students confine their searches to the colleges that are closest to Ontario Center NY with the lowest tuition. Although location and cost are important qualifications, they are by no means the only ones. There are a number of additional factors that you should explore when evaluating programs. To help you with that task, following are a few questions that you should ask about each of the schools you are considering before making your ultimate choice.

Is the Medical Assistant College Accredited? There are several good reasons to confirm that the school you select is accredited. To start with, accreditation helps ensure that the education you receive will be both comprehensive and of the highest quality. Second, if you intend to become certified, you must complete an accredited program. Two of the accepted agencies for accreditation are the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). If your school is not accredited by either of these organizations, you will not be eligible to take the CMA examination. Also, if you intend on obtaining a student loan or financial aid, they are often not offered for non-accredited programs. And finally, as previously mentioned, many potential Ontario Center NY employers will not hire a medical assistant who has not graduated from an accredited school.

What is the School’s Passage Rate? Most of the accredited medical assistant colleges create their programs to prep students to pass one or more certification exams. First, you need to determine which of the certifications the colleges you are reviewing are preparing their students for. If you are planning on taking the CMA for example, then obviously you will need to enroll in a program concentrating on that certification. Next, learn what the school’s passage rate is for the certification and compare it to the national average. Doing this is one of the ways to help assess the quality of a school’s program. Obviously programs with lower rates are ones that you will prefer to eliminate.

Which Programs are Provided? As we covered earlier, there are essentially two routes to getting medical assistant training. You can choose a diploma or certificate program and obtain entry level training in the fastest amount of time, starting at just 6 months, however the average is about 1 year. Or you can choose to obtain an Associate Degree and get a broader education that will take about 2 years to finish in a community college or trade school. Whichever program you elect to pursue, verify that the colleges you are considering offer the kind of program you have an interest in.

Are Internships Offered? Numerous medical assistant schools sponsor internship programs with Ontario Center NY area medical providers. They are a great way to get hands-on clinical training and experience. They can also assist students build relationships within the Ontario Center healthcare community. And as an additional perk, they are an advantage on resumes and for job interviews as well.

Is Job Placement Help Supplied? Landing that very first job may be a daunting undertaking for graduating medical assistant students unless they have a little help from a job placement program. Verify that the schools you are interviewing offer job placement assistance in the Ontario Center NY area and find out what their placement rate is. If a school has a high job placement rate for its graduates, it indicates that it has an excellent reputation within the health care community. It also signifies that it has a broad network of contacts to help place students in jobs.

How Large are the Classrooms? Class size might be an indicator of how much individual instruction you will receive during your training. Smaller classes and classes with a higher teacher to student ratio are more likely to provide increased access to instructors and one-on-one interaction. If convenient, try to monitor a few classes before choosing a school to observe what the teaching environment is like and how much attention the students receive.

Is Class Scheduling Accessible? If you plan on attending a medical assistant school while you continue to work on a full time basis, it’s important that the college you select provides classes that fit your schedule. If you have to attend classes in the evenings or on weekends near Ontario Center NY, confirm that those times are available. You may be able to fit your classes in more conveniently with an online college, but you will still have to schedule all internships or practical training that will be required. Additionally, find out what the protocol is for making up classes that you may have to miss due to illness, work or family issues.

Enrolling in a Medical Assistant Program near Ontario Center New York?

If you are considering attending a medical assistant school in the Ontario Center NY area, following is some background information that may be both interesting and useful regarding your future campus location.

New York State Route 350

New York State Route 350 (NY 350) is a north–south state highway in western Wayne County, New York, in the United States. It extends for 11.40 miles (18.35 km) from an intersection with NY 31 and NY 31F in the village of Macedon to a junction with NY 104 in the town of Ontario. NY 350 serves as the eastern terminus for three routes: the aforementioned NY 31F, NY 286, and NY 441, all of which originate in the Rochester area. Aside from the village of Macedon at its south end and the hamlet of Ontario Center at its north terminus, NY 350 serves mostly rural areas dominated by farmland. NY 350 was assigned c. 1932 to the portion of its routing south of Cator Corners, the north junction with NY 31F. It was extended northward to its current terminus in the 1940s.

NY 350 begins at an intersection with NY 31 in the village of Macedon near the former Mobil Chemical and Tyco plant. The junction also serves as the eastern terminus of NY 31F, which overlaps NY 350 north from the intersection on Ontario Center Road. The conjoined routes cross over the Erie Canal and an industrial railroad spur off of the CSX Transportation-owned Rochester Subdivision before exiting the village and entering the surrounding town of Macedon. NY 31F and NY 350 pass through forested areas up to an overpass carrying the Rochester Subdivision line over the road, at which point the wooded areas give way to open fields. The two routes split roughly 1.75 miles (2.82 km) north of Macedon at a junction named Cator Corners. While NY 31F heads west through Macedon Center toward Monroe County, NY 350 continues east as Ontario Center Road.[4]

As NY 350 departs Cator Corners, it curves back to the north, leaving Macedon Center Road—the east–west roadway that NY 31F follows from Cator Corners west to the county line—to continue east as a county road. NY 350 continues across rolling farmland to the town of Walworth, where it meets the eastern terminus of NY 441 at a four-way intersection with Walworth–Penfield Road west of the hamlet of Walworth. The route continues on, entering a slightly more forested area as it heads toward a junction with NY 286 at Atlantic Avenue. Like NY 31F and NY 441 before it, NY 286 serves as an east–west connector between NY 350 and the eastern suburbs of the city of Rochester 15 miles (24 km) to the west.[4]
